As a new Anglican church in Durant, the founding members chose to name the congregation after St. David of Wales. This may seem an odd choice, and one that ought to have a reasonable explanation! So here goes.
The congregation was born, in a sense, on March 1, 2009. This coincides with the feast day of St. David of Wales. It has been a custom of Christians throughout the centuries to name a parish for a patron saint. So, St. David was considered from the start as an appropriate name.
When a little digging was done on the story of David of Wales, the following snippet was found to be especially meaningful for the folks at the new parish:
"It is claimed that David lived for over 100 years, and he died on a Tuesday 1 March (now St David's Day). It is generally accepted that this was around 590, making the actual year 589. The monastery is said to have been 'filled with angels as Christ received his soul'. His last words to his followers were in a sermon on the previous Sunday. Rhygyfarch transcribes these as 'Be joyful, and keep your faith and your creed. Do the little things that you have seen me do and heard about. I will walk the path that our fathers have trod before us.' 'Do the little things in life' ('Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd') is today a very well-known phrase in Welsh, and has proved an inspiration to many." (Wikipedia article on St. David of Wales)
St. David's Church has had an identity as a "Family of Faith" from the start, and we earnestly desire to uphold the spirit of St. David's parting words as we seek to be faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
